Difference Between Deep Web and Dark Web

You might have heard or read of the deep web or dark web online and might have various questions about it. What is Deep Web and Dark Web? Is it safe to access Dark Web? Which websites come under Dark Web? How to access it? Are Deep Web and Dark Web different? Answers to all your questions about Deep Web and Dark Web will be provided in this article.

According to experts, only 30% of the internet is indexed by search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo etc. Rest 70% is hidden and cannot be found on search engines. To explain how the Internet is divided, think of Internet as an iceberg.

Basically, the internet is divided into three levels:

  • Surface Web – Tip of the iceberg.
  • Deep Web – Mid section of the iceberg.
  • Dark Web – Root of the iceberg.

Surface Web

Surface Web is a portion of the World Wide Web that you find on a typical search engine like Google, Bing or Yahoo. These websites can be blogs, e-commerce websites, social media websites, information websites etc. This is the portion of the web that is accessible by everyone. Surface Web contains 4% of the global traffic. Considering all pages indexed by all search engines consist only 4% of the Internet, you can imagine how big the Internet is.search engines

Deep Web

Deep Web is that portion of the World Wide Web that typical search engines can’t find. The deep web isn’t some mysterious place as depicted. Many of the online articles confuse between Deep Web and Dark Web and inaccurately define Deep Web as Dark Web. 95% of the global traffic of World Wide Web is under Deep Web. Most content on Deep Web is private data and is not available publicly on the regular web. The content on deep web consists of emails, private messages, photos saved on a cloud, the private content of social media etc. Another way to describe Deep Web content is when you navigate away from Google and do a search directly on a website like media libraries that contain a huge amount of data.

Dark Web

The Dark Web is a small portion of the Deep Web that has been intentionally hidden and is inaccessible through standard web browsers. You cannot access Dark Web using a regular web browser. To access it, a special browser like Tor Browser is mandatory. Dark Web consists of a miniature part of the total Internet which is as small as 1%. Getting into the dark side of the Internet is very difficult. You can only be able to access it if you get an invitation by an existing member. It is often analogous with a criminal activity of various degrees, including buying and selling drugs, human trafficking, selling of rare animals skin, pornography, gambling, etc.

Tor Browser

Tor (The Onion Router) is a software that allows users to browse the Web anonymously. It is a worldwide network which developed by the US Navy for keeping one’s identity under wrap. Its managing organization is a non-profit with security as their only aim. Tor became famous after Edward Snowden leaked reports of NSA spying.

How Tor network works:

Tor network bounces your traffic between different servers of Tor so that no one can trace you. To access any website through Tor network, all you have to do is download and install Tor browser. It is available for Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux.  For mobile browsing, you can install an app called Orbot. Once you install the Tor browser, all websites accessed through it won’t be able to trace you. One thing to keep in mind is that you will see a little delay in web page loading when you try to access it through Tor browser.

I’ll be writing in-depth about Tor browser and how to install it in future, so stay tuned for that.

I hope all your questions regarding Deep Web and Dark Web were answered. If you found this article helpful, feel free to share this on the web (Not on Dark Web).
